Do corporate mugshots on a white background give a good first impression to potential clients?
These were shot for a corporate events business in Berkshire. They liked my reportage style of corporate portrait photography and asked me to spend a couple of hours capturing staff portraits around their Berkshire head office. What really pleases me about these is that they are not only good corporate portraits, but they give a really good impression of the company. You get the feel and atmosphere of how they work and communicate. Corporate portrait photography needs to show your people in a approachable and professional light. So many companies see corporate portrait photography as a requirement that needs to be fulfilled as a page allocated on a website or a brochure. We have clicked on the ‘about us’ and ‘meet the team’ link and been faced with rows of headshots on a white background. What does that tell you about a company? Use your corporate portrait photography as a positive marketing tool.

Corporate life in Leadenhall Street. The City. Grantly Lynch
This was from a series of photographs I took in The City. I was trying to capture some generic corporate photographs that would show corporate life in The City. This was taken in Leadenhall Street and I had the shot framed but was waiting to get the right business man to walk through the shot, whilst praying the sun would stay out and that the traffic lights would stay red, keeping the traffic out of the frame. What is interesting is that I feel the sunlight bouncing off the chrome railings gives the photograph ‘The City’ atmosphere I was after, but it was rejected by one picture library because of lens flare.

Corporate Portraits London
This is one of the corporate portraits I took last week. The light was not very good in the room, but I knew that with a little post production work, I could turn it into one of my favourite recent corporate portraits.

Recent commercial commission for an excellent designer in Hampshire. I spent a day capturing natural photographs in an aerospace business in Southampton.
This is where I add value to a project as a photographer. I change an otherwise fairly ordinary looking commercial factory into a set of contemporary and interesting images.

Commercial photography Hampshire
I have worked in Hampshire as a commercial photographer for over 20 years. When I started, commercial commissions were normally art directed and involved a photographer’s assistant and photographer to carry loads of heavy lighting and medium format photography kit. Most Hampshire based companies would commission photography via an ad or design agencies and the photo shoot would be visualised so I would have to try and capture good commercial images that related to the visuals. This process was very time consuming and it took a long hard day to shoot half a dozen images. I decided about 10 years ago that this commercial photography process was slow, expensive and lacked any spontaneity.
All my commercial photography commissions wether they are in Hampshire or London are shot without art direction. The client will brief me with a shot list and then will let me capture good creative photography throughout the day. As a commercial photographer working within tight budgets and time constraints, I can now produce a wide variety of contemporary commercial images in a single day.

Took this corporate portrait today in North London. I need to start pushing the creative button a little more and introducing new ideas to my corporate portraits. The safety tape is nasty stuff but I think it works well in this portrait and adds a extra dimension to the photograph.

Social media Gravatar photograph - corporate photographer London
Here is another Gravatar profile portrait. I prefer this one as she is looking off camera, but some people prefer a portrait on social media sitesto be more direct and to camera. I think you should use one that reflects your personality, but make sure its a good portrait as this is what potential clients will get their first impression from.

Social media Gravatar portrait- corporate photographer London
I have been commissioned recently by corporate clients to produce a portrait for their social media Gravatar. Clients are seeing the importance of how they look in the social media revolution. It is worth doing and its worth doing well. If you are an individual use a portrait- the research shows people like to see a face and not a cartoon or logo. Try and personalise your portrait and add something about your work, location or interest.

Client testimonials of London corporate photographer Grantly Lynch
I have been reading a lot on networking sites about the importance of client testimonials.
These have been taken from my LinkedIn profile.
David Cradduck “Grant doesn’t just take pictures – he has a natural instinct for capturing a mood, an expression, and over many years we have used his documentary style photography for prospectuses and brochures. He clicks away like he wasn’t there, and with some amazing results.”
Suzie Ball “Having worked with Grant on a number of challenging photography assignments, I can honestly say that he has consistently demonstrated creative excellence and has impressed me with his ability to transform the most mundane of subjects into stunning imagery which I have been able to use across a range of media.”
Derek Potts “Always professional and reliable, Grant engages fully with the brief and his work is excellent in all respects. I particularly admire his ability to capture relaxed, natural images of people – even those who squirm about in shyness not wanting their photograph taken!”
Peppa Sheridan “Grant produces excellent photos and is always able to meet the brief. He is creative, delivers on time and is a real pleasure to work with. I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Grant.”
Reena Kataria “An efficient and expert photographer, who is not only quick but reasonably priced.”

Two recent samples of good formal corporate portraits.

Formal portraits - Corporate Photographer London
Formal corporate portraits dont need to be flat and against a white background.
Clients sometimes assume that if corporate portraits are for a website that they need to be basic.
A portrait can be simple but that does not mean it cant be a good. If you take care with the lighting and the composition
your website portraits should enhance your marketing material.

Corporate photographer working in London offices- Grantly Lynch Corporate photographer London
This was shot for a London client’s annual report. I had been asked to capture some generic corporate shots in their London offices. I cropped the business man off at the waist as I wanted to keep the focus on the two clients sitting in the office. The interesting crop gives the photograph a tension, and makes the office look busy and professional.

Corporate photographer London - St Paul's from The Thames Path
I often use The Thames Path to get to my corporate photography commissions in The City. It gets you away from the London traffic and is a rather civilised way to walk through London. At the moment a part of the path is closed around The Tate Modern, but after a small diversion you can cross the Thames by the Millennium Bridge and onto The City.

Corporate offices London. Corporate photographer London
This was taken in a corporate office in London. I was inside the offices and had seen this walkway, and knew it would make a good generic corporate photograph. I wanted a business man or woman walking between the offices and had to wait quite along time to get the person walking through on the right level and with the correct stride. Looks simple but was quite tricky to get right.

Statue outside main entrance to Waterloo Station
Had a commission to take a group photograph outside the Financial Times building. I arrived on time and worked out the best location to take the group photograph, but when I spoke to my client he informed me that the meeting had finished early and that group who were to be photographed had gone onto another location. The client kindly said he would pay for my time, and that I could get an early lunch. As a bonus I managed to shot the statue above the main entrance to Waterloo Station. I have noticed this statue before but the Union Jack was never blowing in the right direction.

Corporate portraits in Surrey business offices. Photographer Grantly Lynch
This corporate client suggested that their offices were not suitable for corporate portraits as they were not very photogenic. This is quite a common response when I suggest client’s offices would be the best option to get a contemporary corporate portrait taken. I have never found an office that was not suitable for corporate portraits. As a corporate portrait photographer I have to be very selective in what is in the portrait and how the subject is positioned. Using a short depth of field helps as this blurs the background. I also use the colours to balance the photograph. In this corporate portrait I thought his tie complimented the chair.

Business portrait photographer on location in London offices
The benefits of having your business portrait taken at your offices or location.
1. Business portraits have moved on from the ‘blue backdrop’, and it is contemporary to look natural and informal so having your business portrait taken at your offices or location of your choice makes sense as you are in your natural business environment.
2. Many business clients say that their offices are not good enough for the photographer to get a good business portrait background. Like the sample here, most of the office in the background is out of focus or selected carefully so that in the photograph the background just suggests a business office location.
3. As a business portrait photographer I like to photograph my portraits in a real office environment as if the client agrees I can get natural photographs as the client really works rather than having to pretend. Much better portraits this way.
4. You don’ t have to travel for your business portrait, the photographer comes to you.

Hire and commission corporate photographer London
By London photographer Grantly Lynch
This was a London commission for a large corporate client that wanted to hire me to wander around their spacious modern offices taking informal corporate photography of their staff and clients for their annual report. Its not usual for clients to hire a photographer with such an open brief, as normally clients hire me with a shot list to capture and then any general office shots are tagged on at the end. The clients offices had recently been refurbished and they had used coloured glass on the outer office windows, makes the photograph a little surreal but quite striking.

Corporate portrait photographer Portsmouth UK
This corporate portrait was taken in the Guildhall Square in Portsmouth. As a corporate portrait photographer you are always looking for interesting locations to shoot portraits, but sometimes just using a very selective background can make a corporate portrait stronger. I had been photographing in Portsmouth for a couple of hours when I saw the flags and knew they make a great backdrop for the portrait as the colours and the glass building are visually interesting. It was taken in Portsmouth but it could have been outside the UN.

Reportage corporate photographer London
Grantly Lynch – Reportage corporate photographer London.
Using a corporate reportage photographer is a very good way for a business to show its strengths to potential clients. By its nature corporate reportage photography is going to reveal more about a company than a few stock library photographs dropped on a website. A good reportage photographer will capture positive photographs of your company and when these are used in online marketing and graphic design this will allow clients to see you as a professional and approachable business.

Relaxed contemporary corporate portrait photography London
Taken in a business meeting, this is a good example of informal, relaxed corporate portraits. This type of corporate portrait photography really lets the personality of the business woman show in the photograph. But like most creative work, this style of relaxed contemporary corporate portrait photography looks simple and natural, but takes a lot of skill and planning to capture.
These type of images are ideal for use on social networking sites and a good digital marketing consultant will help advice on using good portraits within this media.

Natural informal people portraits London office people photographer
This was taken for Orange in their customer support centre. This shows the benefits of using a photographer who captures informal, reportage photographs of people at work in natural unposed situations. There is no way you could have posed this smile, it is a natural smile and says more about this staff member than any words or contrived posed photograph could. If you commission a photographer make sure they can show you samples of informal reportage work as it is not as easy as it looks.

Natural business portrait of business man in meeting by corporate London photographer Grantly Lynch
Captured at a London business school this style of natural informal corporate photographs are becoming very popular. They take time to capture and you have to be alert and aware of what is happening in the meeting and need to be focused and ready to capture the moment. This is why I like being a corporate photographer, I get to spend time watching business people and produce photographs that they can use to benefit their online profiles, CVs and general marketing material. People in business must not forget that an images does tell more than a thousand words, but it has to be a good creative photograph to do that. If its not contemporary in style and does not have a professional corporate feel, it has the reverse effect and the photograph reflects badly on your image and business.

Business woman reading - Grantly Lynch corporate photographer London
This was shot for the London School of Management. Actually had to pose this photograph as the client had seen a corporate marketing photograph she liked and wanted to replicate it. Being known as a photographer that captures informal, relaxed portraits of business people, when I am asked to pose something I have to try and make it look as natural as possible. The business woman in this photograph was very uncomfortable with doing this shot and was laughing and looking rather uncomfortable, so I asked her to read over some documents she had with her that related to the next part of her business studies exam. Worked really well as after a couple of minutes she was focused on her work. Its all in the position of the hand as she reaches for her notepad but wants to keep her train of thought.

Reportage business photographer. Corporate people photographer London UK
This photograph was part of a nationwide campaign I shot for a law firm. It was an open brief to shoot natural photographs around their corporate offices. The client was using the photographs to show the company as a people based business. This shot was not used as part of the original campaign, but was used later in an magazine ad. Just before I took it I overheard the guy with his head in his hands saying ” I know why you did it, I just wish you hadn’t done it” Note the pile of files on his desk.

Business people in offices London corporate photographer Grantly Lynch
This was taken in a rather bland office in London. I had to struggle here and in the end was playing around with focus just to see what I could come up with. The client’s was in the financial sector and the business premises were quite old fashioned but they wanted to show there staff etc in an informal way. I got plenty of staff sat at desks with phones etc and then began creating other photographs that I did not think they would use, and was a little concerned that if they saw them on the back of the camera might have thought Id lost the plot.
When they sent me the annual report I noticed they had used this image on the back cover!

Business headline in FT by London corporate photographer Grantly Lynch
I shot this style of close up and short depth of field headline photographs for royalty free stock images http://www.ukstockimages.com/ I have know started shooting client’s business logos, key phrases and corporate messages in the same way as they are proving popular for use on their sites. It’s a good way to get a message across in a direct yet slightly more subtle way then using a graphic.

Corporate portraits Portsmouth-Business photographer Grantly Lynch
This was shot for a corporate client who required some informal business portraits for use in marketing and on business social networking sites. He gave me a fairly open brief and allowed me to direct the shoot. I had asked him to have someone else around so he could talk about business and this would help him relax and give him a point of focus.
I often blur the background in corporate portraits, but this does not mean that I am not careful as to what is in them. This was taken at IBM offices North Harbour Portsmouth and the whole reception area had been recently refurbished. It had some strong design features and these balanced with the subject very well. The offices faced north so the light was very soft and cold and this helped cool the colours in the photograph. As a corporate photographer you are basically always trying to balance lots of elements and bring them all together in a split second. Happy photographer? I was hoping I could get someone walking past in the background, but if I had stopped the subject talking to arrange it, I would have killed the moment.

These are a selection of business photographs taken at the Winchester University Business School in Hampshire and were commissioned by Hampshire graphic designers The Cradduck Design Company

As a business photographer based in Hampshire it is good to get a local commission but this was also an interesting brief.
Professor Neil Marriott head of the University if Winchester Business School had asked David Cradduck to help them project a more corporate feel to the Universities marketing material. I was commissioned to tour the university and capture photographs that reflected the business element whilst still retaining the feel of education.

For a photographer this was quite a tricky commission as I was having avoid slipping into the trap of photographing the typical education style photographs and having to focus on creating corporate and business imagery.

There were plenty of students in the University enjoying the Hampshire sunshine, and this was a problem for me as taking photographs of the students sitting around enjoying themselves did not project the right image, as more corporate / business photographs need to look more studious and professional. This was a half day commission and I managed to capture 200 plus photographs.

Corporate photography in London business © Photographer Grantly Lynch
This is another corporate photograph taken for http://www.lester-aldridge.co.uk/ They were in the process of moving to new offices in London and did not want to feature the reception area too prominently. I decided to focus on the business logo and asked some ‘corporate’ people to stand in the background to add interest and scale to the photograph. The problem for any photographer is time when you are photographing corporate people as there are constraints because of the amount of photographs required and how much they want to spend on photographers fees. This normally means that you dont have a lot of time as the photographer to set up shots and corporate people would rather be getting on with their business. In this case I over exposed the background so that it blew all the details in the window and this cut out the need to sort and arrange that area. The corporate logo was in focus but the rest of the photograph was made out of focus so the elements became a generic business office. I asked the ‘business people’ to just chat and keep moving as I did not want the photograph to looked too posed, also reminded them not to look at the photographer!

Business portrait in London office © Corporate photographer Grantly Lynch
I have added interest to this corporate portrait by using space in the composition of the photograph. The subject is positioned tightly to the left and I have allowed the table to make a diagonal angle which always creates tension within a photograph. The use of composition in a corporate portrait is useful for graphic designers as there is plenty of clear space for text or graphics. The colours work really well, but I cant take credit for the tie!

Detail photograph in The City © Grantly Lynch Corporate Portrait Photographer London
This photograph captures a feel for business life in The City. There is not a lot of content in the photograph but each of the elements suggest different aspects of London. It would be good to see a series of these type of business and corporate details of London life in The City used in corporate marketing material.

Corporate people photograph © Grantly Lynch – Corporate Portrait Photographer London
This photograph was taken after a I had finished a corporate portrait commission for a business based next to St Pauls in London. You get a great view of the Millenium Bridge and I wanted to capture a generic photograph of corporate people commuting in London. I like this shot as it had a lighter more contemporary feel to it, but still retains a sense corporate London.

Corporate office portrait © Photographer Grantly Lynch
This style of corporate portraits was taken for a London client in their office boardroom. As a corporate photographer I am always looking to add interesting elements of the client’s business into their corporate portraits. It could be a corporate logo on the wall, corporate colours or just something unique that would brand their corporate portraits. With this photographic commission there was very little of interest in the offices, so I concentrated on the interaction between the corporate people. This meant having to carefully observe the meeting and planning what is going to happen and where you need to be and who you want to focus on. There was a real sense of communication in these corporate portraits and I feel it really captures the business woman in a corporate meeting but has good informal feel to it.

Corporate commuters on London Bridge
Took this on the way to a shoot at rush hour. I have often seen photographers at this point photographing the commuters as rush to work. I thought the sign would be a better point of focus and made for a better composition.

Corporate people portraits in business meeting. People photographer Grantly Lynch London
This corporate people photograph was taken for http://la-law.com/ as part of a commission to photograph people in their London corporate offices. Photographing corporate people in a business meetings is a tried and tested format, but photographers would normally try and isolate people for each portrait. In this portrait I decided to add other people to the portrait. It adds depth to the photograph and suggests good communication and teamwork between the people within the company.

Creative corporate portrait London UK
Composing corporate portraits carefully can really add to the portrait. The use of space makes this corporate portrait much stronger and adds tension to an otherwise standard corporate portrait. This was shot in a business meeting where I was playing around with shapes and the juxtaposition of different objects around the corporate boardroom. This sort of space is a bonus for graphic designers as they have space to add text and graphics.

Informal corporate portrait London © Grantly Lynch Corporate Photographer London UK
Recent portrait for http://www.r3dsystems.co.uk who are based in London and are in the process of updating their corporate marketing material. I had an open brief to come up with shots around their corporate offices. Informal corporate portraits are popular with clients as the photographer tends not to have to interfere with the day to day running of the corporate office. This does mean that the photographer has to take a little time and care being aware of situations that might produce a good photograph and be prepared to wait around to get it.

Corporate portrait of business woman in London © Photographer Grantly Lynch London UK
I have been looking for new ways to photograph corporate portraits in London. The convenient location is the corporate office, but this has its limitations and with the visually rich streets of London outside most corporate premises it seems a shame not to use them. In the past I had been commissioned by Citywire magazine to shoot corporate portraits anywhere but in the office and this would often fill me with dread as the weather could misbehave or the sitter might not fancy a stroll down to the river. I have started to have a quick butchers around corporate buildings in London before I go inside, just in case I get asked to go outside to do the portrait. With many of my corporate clients having a much higher requirement for using photographs all media, being able to give them another option is a real advantage. This corporate portrait was shot directly opposite The Bank of England, but i wanted to be a little more subtle and just suggest elements of London, with sitter not looking to camera and reading the FT.

Corporate woman reading in meeting London © Photographer Grantly Lynch London UK
This was taken in a corporate meeting in London. I kept the composition as simple as possible and the colours very muted so that the whole focus is on the hand. It works very well as a generic ‘corporate’ photograph as there is nothing to date it.
You can see by the position of the hand and fingers that the business woman is interested in something on that page as she is lingering before turning to the next page.

- This image was taken from a series of corporate portraits for http://www.ddblondon.com/ These work really well as they are formal and corporate in style but three little creative differences make the subjects seem much more friendly and approachable. 1. Have the subject sit/stand at a slight angle to you. 2. Use bounced lighting to soften shadows. 3. Instead of a plain white backdrop I used the office windows as the background, they give a depth to the image and make it seem a much more natural environment for a corporate portrait.
- Working as a corporate photographer in London, you are often faced with different corporate offices and most portraits needing to be completed in a short time frame, but as a photographer you need to spot these possibilities. Corporate clients marketing material will benefit from creative portraits and hopefully you will be asked back.
