Recent group photography for The International Maritime Organization.

Group photography for the IMO London

The IMO Secretary-General is retiring at the end of the year and the staff wanted a team photo which also featured the IMO London location. After a quick recce of the building, the roof terrace was the ideal location but it needed to be shot on a cloudy day as November sunlight would have meant The Thames would have been in strong sunlight and the roof terrace in heavy shadow.

Group photographs can be very tricky as people tend to all want to stand at the back or directly behind the person in front of them. For this group photo we taped off areas and then directed people by megaphones. When everyone was in place I was only waiting for London Bus to cross Lambeth Bridge, but in the end had to photoshop it in from an earlier test shot.

On average each of my corporate photography commissions requires me to deliver 500mb – 1GB of images to the client. I have been relying on the Post Office and sending DVDs off daily, but this adds a massive hassle factor and slows things down. Even when a client asks me to email a selected few, they nearly always get stuck in their firewall. I have decided to create my own corporate photography channel which allows me to upload 2GB each time and the client can download via a email link. There are similar services around, but I like the way you can brand this one with your own images and choose keywords in the domain.

This style of staff photography is an alternative to traditional staff portraits on a plain background. These have a more contemporary feel using a mixture of tungsten lighting and natural light, which results in a more flattering portrait. Shooting staff photos this way reduces costs by saving on studio fees and can be captured very quickly in any office environment.

Recent shoot for Blue Coat at IQ Farnborough. I had shoot some headshots of the client and a couple of PR styles portraits with the corporate logo. I asked if we could go outside and do some images with the restored airship hangar in the background. The client knew the history of the structure and looked very comfortable standing in front of it for the portrait.

This was taken at a team building event in Hampshire. I was trying to capture the interaction between the people participating in the session. It is important to keep the focus on an individual, whilst at the same time involve other people in the photograph.

These event photos were taken at a NLP team building event in Hampshire. I felt it was important to capture individual photos of the speaker at precise moments during his presentation. This gives a better insight into the event, rather than using a general shot from the back of the event room showing lots of backs of heads and a small image of the speaker at the front.

This is a selection of recent corporate portrait commissions which I have grouped into three styles.

1. Formal office portraits.

This style has the person looking to camera with controlled lighting and uses the client’s office in the background which brings a business element to the portrait.

Corporate team portraits are fairly tricky, as you not only have your composition and lighting to balance, but you need the people to be doing the right thing, all together at a precise moment. You have to pose groups shots, they will not happen otherwise, but I like to make my group portraits look as natural as possible and try and avoid the ‘football team’ pose.

This portrait is from a series I took for the London School of Management for the ‘about us’ page on their new website. The subjects needed to be looking to camera, but I wanted to keep the feel fairly informal and relaxed. I have noticed that when you are trying to capture people in this style you only get one chance. They tend to give you one natural smile and then after that they start to feel a little awkward and the smile becomes fixed. You need to be ready.

Recent corporate portrait for City Lifeline Ltd who are a data centre based in the London near The City. This part of their offices is the data storage area and is perfect to illustrate what the company does. The problem with it is that the available lighting is very poor, and due to security restrictions it is difficult to add additional lighting,  but after tweaking the image in photoshop, it makes a great press release portrait.

Natural portraits of corporate people in their offices are becoming very contemporary. The benefit for the client is that they do not have to pose. The benefit for the photographer is that people act naturally and focus on their work. This does not make it easy to capture informal portraits of directors. The photographer will have to anticipate possible natural situations and be ready to compose an informal portrait at the precise moment they happen.

These are some of my recent corporate portrait photography commissions. Although they are basically single corporate portraits, the photography styles vary depending on the clients requirements. Corporate portrait photography can encompass many different uses from annual reports, online CVs, document pitches, social media portraits, press releases, editorial features and website profiles. The samples below show corporate portrait photography in some of these mediums.

Press release corporate portrait photography

This PR corporate portrait was commissioned by BioMarin Europe Ltd. The standing pose and corporate surroundings suggest a formal and businesslike image.

Annual report corporate portrait photography

This is a very minimalist corporate portrait. It was commissioned for Camco Global’s annual report and needed to be simple in its composition and lighting, but still make the portrait look professional.

Marketing corporate portrait photography

Corporate portrait photography commissioned by Plato GB. This portrait was taken at a networking event and used for social media marketing. This type of photography is more difficult to capture as it is not posed and therefore the photographer has to be alert to any circumstances that offer a good portrait.

Editorial corporate portrait photography

This was commissioned by First Option Ltd. Tim Considine need some editorial portrait photography for a feature in The New Europe magazine. He wanted natural and fairly relaxed corporate portraits, so I decided to shoot these with natural light and used the glass windows in their corridor to bounce lots of light around to even out highlights and shadows.

This was captured at a social media event. This type of animated portrait makes the businessman look professional, involved and passionate about his work.

Document presentation corporate portrait photography

This corporate portrait was commissioned for the client’s online photography profile. It was to be used for his director CV and sent out with any client proposals and presentations. I really like this pose as its is very natural, it does not look posed and he was very comfortable being photographed.

Reportage corporate portrait photography

I captured this portrait at a corporate meeting and like its reportage feel. This type of corporate portrait photography is becoming more popular as potential clients like to see ‘real’ portraits on websites and in marketing literature.

Online profile corporate portrait photography

This way commissioned by an American client who wanted a corporate profile portrait for his virtual business card.

Natural corporate portrait photography

Informal corporate portrait taken at a networking event. These are ideal for capturing a client’s character and make a more personal natural portrait. The other great benefit for the client is that no posing is involved. They can just get on with business and allow the photographer to capture the portraits.

These are some of my recent executive portraits. They have been commissioned for a variety of different uses, from press release portraits, social media avatars, CV profile photos and executive portraits for annual reports. There is a trend in corporate portrait photography to have informal business portraits for use in different media, but the more formal style is still required when you have executive portraits looking to camera, and making eye contact with the viewer.

Graeme was a great subject to photograph as he gave me the freedom to shoot creatively and was open to suggestions throughout the commission. As a corporate photographer I tend to like to photograph people in a natural way and let office life continue with me observing and capturing moments as they happen.

Corporate photography for the financial sector in Mayfair London

Commission for Optimum Asset Management based in Mayfair. The client needed some interesting corporate portraits for a new website they were launching and had been advised by their designer to get some decent corporate portraits. I have been experimenting with using reflections recently in corporate portraits as the trend in architecture is to use lots of sheet glass in new and refurbished London buildings.

This was taken last month at the new London Stock Exchange in Paternoster Square. I have been experimenting with photographing through glass. This can diminish image quality, but I think the benefits of interesting reflections balance this out. This was shot across the London Stock Exchange glass stairwell. I think the reflections add atmosphere to the photograph, and give a better feel of business in The City.
