Staging people in group photographs

Contemporary PR portrait photography © Grantly Lynch – Corporate Portrait Photographer London UK

This was a commission for Hammersmith Medicines Research to photograph a new ward they had just opened. The brief was to show its open plan layout and being used by staff and patients. I had to stage this shot, but make it look natural at the same time. The trick with any shot with a number of people is to have a point of interest ie the trio in the foreground and then balance the rest of the composition around them. I made the people in the background stand up to balance out the image and asked some of them to walk around to stop it looking too static.
